![]() KUALA LUMPUR: Four of the country’s top schools — St John’s Institution, Victoria Institution, Malay College Kuala Kangsar and Tengku Kurshiah College — may have produced the nation’s ministers, corporate captains and scholars, but they have lost some of their lustre over the years. Not only that, the 4 schools would be the new center for International Education, similar to that of INTEC and Mara Banting.
But there is a caveat. "I expect them to deliver. Short of giving them 14-carat gold-plated taps, I am willing to give them anything they want," he said after launching Rakan Cop Bistari for secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur at St John’s yesterday. Under its clusters of excellence programme, the heads of these school are free to make a wide range of decisions which could include the power to set fees, increase school hours, raise funds and select training courses for their teachers. And when it comes to additional funds to improve their infrastructure or facilities, all the schools have to do is to ask, said Hishammuddin. He said although these four schools were on the coveted list, he would not be announcing the other schools set to join them as they would be told by the ministry. "There are harder issues to deal with than equipment or infrastructure needs, such as leadership, the right teachers and soft development," he said. He said these schools would have to perform outstandingly, as they would be setting the standards for other schools. "We will give them anything they need so there is no excuse for not performing. If these 300 schools can’t do it, we cannot expect the 10,000 other schools to meet the challenge," he said. At the launch of the Rakan Cop Bistari programme, which allows schools, parents and the police to interact for a safer and more secure school environment, Hishammuddin said students could be the eyes and ears of the police to help address disciplinary problems in schools. The system, which uses the short-messaging service and information technology, will be set up in schools in Kuala Lumpur for now and may be extended to other areas if it is successful, he said.
Adding to the points above.. the 4 schools mentioned above will be converted into an International Prepatory Center..like the one in INTEC and Mara Banting.. In the coming years, 2 new blocks will be build behind the new teachers' apartment thus adding a new section of The Malay College, adding another section to the present 2 sections.. the Ministry of Education has approved an allocation for the two new blocks.. The 2 new blocks will be for students of International Baccalaureate (IB), a prepatory center for students going overseas to further their studies. The announcement was made during the PIBG meeting held on the 9th of September 2006.
