hmm... Perhaps this article might help you guys in knowing DR. Ms' nature.

In your article published in Straits Times today, 11 May 2008, on the interview with Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, somewhere towards the end, you stated:

"He left Umno to form Semangat 46......"

I would like to correct that statement.

Tengku Razaleigh never left UMNO to form Semangat 46. The original UMNO was declared unlawful by the court leaving all UMNO members then "partyless"!

As a result, Barisan National (BN) then was helmed by Ling Liong Sik, the MCA president at that time, circa 1988, for a very brief period of time until UMNO Baru was formed thereby Mahathir then took over again the presidency of BN! (Therefore, 2008, is the 20th Anniversary of UMNO Baru! The word Baru was left out of the party name by UMNO's leadership in an apparent move to resume the identity of the original UMNO that would have celebrated its 62nd Anniversary today, had it not been declared illegal in 1988! Wonder if this is legal????)

When UMNO Baru was formed by Mahathir and his team, disallowing the likes of Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Tengku Abdul Rahman and Tun Hussein Onn from joining UMNO Baru, the late Tengku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia's father of Independence, then took upon himself to get Semangat 46 formed and asked Tengku Razaleigh to head it after the formation. This was done to stop the "partyless" UMNO members from joining other parties such as PAS or even DAP.

The late Tengku Abdul Rahman had the wisdom then to ensure there was no mass migration of UMNO members who supported Tengku Razaleigh in his bid to be the President of UMNO in 1987, to the opposition. He then willed Tengku Razaleigh to join UMNO Baru once Mahathir has cooled down and see the need for Malay unity. This happened after the results of the 1995 election when Mahathir realized that UMNO Baru's strength was eroded in the 1995 general election. As history has it, Tengku Razaleigh followed the late Tengku Abdul Rahman's will to the letter and disbanded Semangat 46, that by then was renamed Parti Melayu Semangat 46, and got its members to apply enmasse to join UMNO Baru in 1996.

Sadly, some ex-Semangat 46 members were not given the expected similar welcome that Mahathir accorded to Tengku Razaleigh at divisional and branch levels; acceptance into the UMNO Baru for some were made extremely difficult thus finding some ex-Semangat 46 members joining PAS. A very high profile case in this incidence was the like of Tun Salleh Abas who contested on a PAS ticket in Terengganu.

I hope this explanation would put the facts right in history: FOREVER, and no mention would be made again of Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah ever having left or leaving UMNO. He is an UMNO man through and through; TO THE CORE!

Arwah Tunku Abdul Rahman pernah menyokong Tengku Razaleigh. Sekarang sesiapa pun tidak boleh kata apa-apa pada Presiden dan Perdana Menteri. Ini bukan Umno."
