KABUL, 8 February 2006 — Afghan police yesterday killed four people protesting the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that have unleashed a wave of anger across the world. Fresh unrest erupted in the Middle East, Asia and Africa over the drawings, which were first published in Denmark, then Norway and then several other European countries.

Afghan crowds attacked a base of NATO Norwegian troops with guns and grenades and police opened fire, bringing the death toll in protests against the cartoons to 10.

F-16 warplanes flew overhead in a show of force while the Norwegians fired tear gas, rubber bullets and warning shots, managing to restore order by early evening. Reinforcements, including British soldiers of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, were dispatched to the city.

President Hamid Karzai and Norway’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg discussed the incident by telephone, the president’s office said.

Demonstrations against the cartoons also erupted in other Afghan cities. In western Herat, about 5,000 people hurled stones and smashed lamps at the offices of a German firm and the local PRT. They also threw stones at ISAF troops.

In the capital Kabul, about 150 men armed with large wooden sticks tried to storm the Danish Embassy but were pushed back by police. There were a few other small demonstrations in the city.

In Iran, a crowd pelted the Danish Embassy with petrol bombs and stones for a second day and protesters gathered outside Norway’s mission.

Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller called his Iranian counterpart “and demanded in clear terms that Iran does all it can to protect the embassy and Danish lives,” a spokesman said. Tehran has cut trade ties with Denmark.

Iran’s best-selling newspaper has launched a competition to find the best cartoon about the Holocaust. The Hamshahri said the contest was designed to test the boundaries of free speech — the reason given by many European newspapers for publishing the cartoons of the Prophet.

Davoud Kazemi, who is in charge of the contest, said each of the 12 winners would have their cartoons published and receive two gold coins (worth about $140 each) as a prize.

Newspapers said Iran had raised duties on Danish-flagged shipping and could ban Danish shipping entirely from its ports. Danish shipping and oil company A.P. Moeller-Maersk, which has extensive interests in the world’s fourth-largest crude oil producer, is likely to be most affected by the measure, announced by Iranian Commerce Minister Masoud Mirkazemi.

EU trade chief Peter Mandelson warned Iran it should “think twice” about imposing a boycott on Danish goods or canceling contracts with European countries. “I would make it clear to the government of Iran that any boycott of Danish goods is a boycott of the European Union as a whole,” Mandelson said.

Nigerian state lawmakers burned Danish and Norwegian flags and canceled a 23-million-euro ($27 million) contract to import buses. A rowdy session of the Kano House of Assembly also voted unanimously to ban the sale of all Danish and Norwegian products in the state, a mainly-Muslim region and the main commercial center of northern Nigeria.

After rioters set Danish missions ablaze in Syria and Lebanon at the weekend, the European Union presidency issued a strongly worded warning to 19 countries across the Middle East that they were obliged to protect EU missions.

US President George W. Bush called Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen to express support and solidarity, the premier said. The White House said both leaders “reiterated the importance of tolerance and respect for religions of all faith and freedom of the press.” Croatia became the latest country where a newspaper printed the drawings. The cartoons have appeared in Australia, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Fiji, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, Ukraine and Yemen.

A French court refused to order the confiscation of a magazine which planned to print the images today.

The 12 cartoonists whose work touched off the firestorm were reported to be in hiding, frightened, and under police guard.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Muslims around the world to show restraint over the cartoons, which he described as a “trap” aimed at portraying Islam as violent.

The cartoons are “an open provocation, a trap ... (that aims) to show the world pictures of violence from the Muslim world,” Erdogan said in a speech before his parliamentary group.

“Neither Turkey nor the Muslim world should fall into this trap,” Erdogan said. “The Muslim world must demonstrate that it has the reason, the common sense and the maturity to fend off such provocations.”
